Pitchfork reviews Led Zeppelin "Mothership"

While making the point that Led Zeppelin greatest hits albums are pretty superfluous (no one who considers themselves a rock and roll fan should be taken seriously if they don't own every single one of Zep's albums.) However, they do report that the remastering is superior to the 1990 and 1993 box sets, which were revelatory at the time compared to the unforgivably atrocious original CD issues, but now sound a bit thin compared to the advances in CD mastering that have occurred in the past decade.

Still, content-critiquing aside, the remastering on Mothership is no small achievement, and it sounds revelatory on even the shittiest stereos. Check Bonham's pitter-pattering in the verses of "Ramble On", or the still-intact fuzz at the top of "Immigrant Song", or the tiny percussive "fwwpts" on "D'yer Mak'er", or the restored outro to "Over the Hills and Far Away".

Led Zeppelin: Mothership: Pitchfork Record Review
Which means I'll probably end up buying it, as a stopgap until Jimmy Page releases super-hi-def versions of all the albums.
