Latest chapter from the annals of King Canute: OiNK gets shut down by the IFPI

King Canute, of course, was the mythological ruler who declared war on the tide, and ever after has served as a metaphor for people in positions of power who wage useless battles against inevitable forces. Like this guy:

Now Kennedy is threatening a new wave of actions targeting anyone responsible for ripping and uploading works ahead of release, including, he says, music journalists. OiNK "was the first in our sights," he says. "The damage being done with prerelease piracy is almost immeasurable. It ruins the launch of a record [and] damages the impact on the market for all records."

I love the "almost immeasurable." The music industry is going to collapse because people are so eager to hear new albums they will actually do something illegal to get them. Huh? Here's a basic fact of business, which can't be repeated enough. If people want your product, you should sell it to them, in as convenient and expedient fashion as possible. If you think having a product ready and then waiting for six months makes any sense; well, it doesn't.

In the software industry, once software is done, it just gets released. (Usually it's late, of course.) If Apple finishes their a new ipod in May, they don't wait until October to release it because, wow, people buy the most ipods in the period before Christmas. Instead, they release it May, sell a shit ton of ipods, and once Christmas comes around, they sell a shit ton more, because, of course, all the people who really, really wanted an ipod have been walking advertisements for it in the intervening six months.

You never, never have any advantage in waiting to sell something. Who knows what might happen? The economy could tank, the terrorists could win, anything. If it's done, sell it.

Just like Radiohead did. And rumors are they've made millions from their name-your-own-price selling of "In Rainbows."
