Summer is here and that means it's time for to find the big jam of the summer. Last summer it was Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy", at least, until it became Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack." This summer, though, it's anyone's guess.
Here are some candidates:
Straight to the Bank.mp3 Leaving aside the unpleasant homophobia of the opening couplet, this song really isn't very impressive. It tanked at radio and forced the delay of the album's release until September. In movie parlance, it's in "turn-around."
Rehab (Remix) [Featuring Jay-Z].mp3 The ubiquitious Jay-Z guests on a remix, which he does kind about as often as I go to the bathroom or Robert Pollard writes songs. By Jay-Z's standards his verses are nothing to write home about, but still pretty amusing.
Give It to Me (Laugh At Em) Remix.mp3 Timbland isn't really that great a rapper, and since he became a super-producer his skills have, understandably, deteriorated. Of course Jay-Z is now president of a large record company and can still deliver mad flow.
Umbrella.mp3 I have it on authority that this is the jam of the moment (a certified "banger" even) in New York City. Since NYC is ground zero for summer hip-hop, in that it's the only hip-hop mecca I can think of that actually experiences discrete seasons, I declare this, then to be the leading candidate for song of the summer.
