Only three years after the release of "To the Five Boroughs" the Beastie Boys are returning with a new album--but one of all instrumentals. Perhaps they realized that now that they are pushing forty, their ironic white boy rapping doesn't age that well, and their attempts to rap about serious subjects (like 9-11) fell flatter than a Swedish pancake, that it would be more fun to let the music do the talking. Fortunately, it seems like some things haven't changed. Mike D is just as much of a smart-ass as he's ever been.
Mike joked that they plan to use some of their festival dates to expand their fanbase. "We're trying to really cross over into the whole jam band, Bonnaroo, Government-- what's it?-- Gov't Mule? That whole genre. We can play up the jam band [aspect], have a hacky sack tent. The 'Hack Sack Hand'... 'Sack Hand State Fair', we're going to be performing at. We're going to be performing at a lot of state fairs and a lot of pie-eating contests, too."
They are also talking about releasing another version of the album with guest vocalists on all the tracks. We'll see if that actually happens.
